D23 Top News and Announcements from the 2019 Convention

September 4, 2019

The ultimate convention for Disney fans just ended and Disney dropped a ton of D23 top news regarding what is going on in the Disney parks, entertainment, and beyond. I have to be honest, I have a real love/hate relationship with this event.  Why?  It offers the coolest announcements of the year.  I’m always blown away but the creativity of the Imagineers and everything that is coming.   Then comes the reality check….2021, 2022, 2023 – I’m really not that patient a person.   I wish they wouldn’t have us looking so far away as I want it all now!  Here is a look at D23 top news and announcements for the most anticipated new Disney developments.

Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will be the first “other-world” showcase pavilion at Epcot. The attraction will feature a new storytelling coaster that rotates to focus guests on the action, and will include the first reverse launch on a Disney coaster. (Disney/Marvel)

The big focus for the parks at D23 was the complete overhaul of Epcot. The announcement of Project Gamma in 2017’s D23 convention gave us ideas. We thought Future World would get some new dining, a new Marvel ride, and some refreshed landscaping. What that has turned out to be is a complete retheming of the park. Using the current pavilions as a reference point Epcot now has a unified world focus that manifests in four neighborhoods, World Showcase, World Celebration, World Nature (Future World West), and World Discovery (Future World East). The most anticipated change is still the Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster Cosmic Rewind. One of the longest indoor coasters, Cosmic Rewind, boasts the world’s first backward launch and a slew of technological achievements to help tell the story and immerse guests.

EPCOT

The changes at EPCOT have become so expansive that it is practically a whole new park. In addition to a new thrill ride, EPCOT is receiving new attractions in the World Showcase, including Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in France as well as a Beauty and the Beast Sing-A-Long. A brand new surprise announcement reveals plans to expand the United Kingdom Pavilion as well. Cherry Tree Lane will invite guests into the world of Mary Poppins and there will even be a new ride, although details have still not been released by Disney. Imagineer Tony Baxter once conceived of a dark ride through the animated world of Bert’s chalk drawings. That would be exciting. For those who are fans of great Disney movies, we are excited to share Journey of Water, inspired by Moana will create a amazig playzone.  These changes will be rolling out over the next few years, so contact your EZ Dis travel concierge before your trip, so you don’t miss a thing.

Avengers Campus

Guests can suit up alongside their favorite Super Heroes at the Avengers Campus, beginning in 2020 at Disney California Adventure park at Disneyland Resort. The campus will feature the first Disney ride-through attraction to feature Spider-Man, along with other heroic encounters. (Disney/Marvel)

A lot of the D23 convention was focused on all of the changes coming to Walt Disney World. Partly because the destination has not seen a significant update since Animal Kingdom opened over 20 years ago. Since then Disney resorts have sprouted and branched out across the globe. New announcements for other Disney parks included Zootopia in Shanghai and a new castle in Hong Kong. The most significant announcement, however, was Avengers Campus. The Marvel Land will have a story that overarches across three international Disneyland resorts. Avengers Campuses are going to open in Paris, Hong Kong, and Anaheim. Spiderman will headline phase 1 with a new web-slinging dark ride. Pym Technologies will have a test kitchen that experiments with the size of your food. Doctor Strange will have a show as well, plus other Avengers will be seen in the area.

Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser

This D23 revealed that many of the more immersive aspects that were announced for Galaxy’s Edge at 2017’s D23 will be locked behind a new kind of luxury resort. The Star Wars Hotel details included the name of the hotel and a glimpse at the overall experience. The hotel will operate as a cruise ship. The premise is that you are onboard a Galactic Cruiseliner. Every window in the Halcyon– including those in each cabin – has a view of the galaxy beyond, with ever-changing vistas as the ship progresses from place to place. The experience is two nights, and during that time, there will be a port day at Batuu. While onboard, you will be completely shut off from the outside in a truly immersive space-traveling fantasy that puts you in the center of the story.

When they arrive onboard, guests will step into the ship’s main deck Atrium to begin their journey through a galaxy far, far away. (Disney/Lucasfilm)

Disneyland’s New Parade

Set to debut in spring 2020 at Disneyland Park in California, the new Magic Happens parade will come to life with an energetic musical score and a new song produced in partnership with singer-songwriter Todrick Hall. The parade will feature stunning floats, beautiful costumes, and beloved Disney characters from “Moana,” “Coco,” “Sleeping Beauty,” and more – all led by Mickey Mouse and his pals. (Disney)

A new parade is arriving at Disneyland and it’s a gorgeous parade that features imaginatively styled floats themed to Coco, Sleeping Beauty, Moana, and more. Magic Happens is the name of the parade and it’s arriving in Spring 2020 so it’s a good time to start booking your Disneyland vacation. Each parade float will feature a classic moment that signifies when the magic happens.

Disney Cruise Line – Wish

It’s finally here…or at least it’s name is here. The Disney Wish will be the fifth ship to join the fleet. Like the ships before it, this ship is being built at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Germany. It will sail out in late 2021, cross the Atlantic Ocean and welcome guests aboard in January 2022. The Wish will have 1,250 staterooms just like The Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy but will be a slightly larger ship. We can’t wait to hear what ports she will call on.

Stern of new Disney Cruise Line Wish Ship featuring Rapunzel
A beloved hallmark of Disney Cruise Line, it has been a tradition to adorn the back of Disney ships with an iconic character that reflects the theme of each vessel. The Disney Wish’s stern will feature Rapunzel. Our favorite artsy princess, paintbrush in hand, uses her enchanted hair to suspend herself as she decorates the stern of the ship with the help of her feisty sidekick, Pascal. (Disney)
